Introduction
The aim of this project according to me was to learn how to represent different elements with the help of dots and shapes with the help of mediums like pencil, charcoal pencil, micro tip pens and ink.
UNDERSTANDING THE POTENTIAL OF A DOT
At first when we were asked to make lines in the line bank, I was a bit confused. We were supposed to represent those lines in the form of circular dots. I realized that a dot can have so much value of its own while representing it in a form. The size and character of a dot can be manipulated to represent something.
UNDERSTANDING CHARACTERSTICS OF PENCILS
To make these dots, on the first day we used different grades of pencils. I started with a normal HB pencil and then explored more on 6B and 8B pencils. The HB pencil gave a much thinner and lighter stoke that I realized could be used for representing something that is weaker or lighter. Whereas the 6B and 8B pencils gave a thicker and darker stroke which could be used to represent stronger and bolder elements.
DIFFERENT MEDIUMS
The mediums we worked with in this project were pencil, charcoal sticks and ink. All these mediums were very different from each other.
While working with pencil, it was easier to erase in case there were any mistakes.
This was the first time I worked with a charcoal stick. After making a few explorations with it, I realized that it was a very messy medium as the compressed charcoal would get on my fingers and made my surroundings dirty. The explorations made with the charcoal stick would easily get smudged. It gave a darker effect to the drawing than the pencils.
The wet medium used in this project was black ink. This was also a medium I didn’t work with before. The ink gave a very jet black and shiny stroke and it was easier to fill inside the object as I was using It with a brush.
THEMATIC REPRESENTATION
The composition that I made for representing rain represented different types of water droplet seen from a point of vision. Some droplets appear bigger as they are closer to the eye and some droplets appear smaller as they are far from the eye. The different shades on a droplet represent the water density. Some droplets are represented in black, mainly the ones in the front because it shows the density of water in a droplet closer to eye.
MUDDIEST POINT
The muddiest point in this project for me was to represent a circle in form of square dots. This was difficult for me as the sharp edges of a square was not helping me to give the essence of a circle.
CLEAREST POINT
The clearest point for me was when we had to represent a cone with circular dots. This was easier for me as I was able to use different sizes of circles to give the expected shape. By filling some circles with black ink, I was able to show the 3D form of a cone.
KEY LEARNINGS
I learnt how to manipulate a dot, line or a shape in a way that it represents another form.
I learnt how to represent different emotions like power, confusion and rhythm through dots.
I also learnt the use of different mediums like charcoal pencil and ink.
Sending the work simultaneously and receiving feedback at the same time as well as seeing other people's work kept me motivated throughout the project.
