LJL- M2M

Introduction

The aim of this project according to me was to be able to create something that is different and magnificent from something so simple like paper. Paper comes in many different forms with different properties. With the help of this project, I was able to explore different kinds of paper and what all can it be transformed into to create interesting designs.

THEME- FOREST

On one side, I used sunboard strips to represent forest fires or burning trees. To show this, I burnt the top part of the sunboard strip and it instantly became black which gave the effect. The burning of the strip released fumes, therefore I wore a mask for this process.

The material got burnt easily and quickly. Therefore it was important to burn it for a very less time. I burnt the strip for almost 2-3 seconds.

If burnt for a longer time, the material would break and fall off.

On the other side I made plenty of cylinders from brown paper to represent the trees present in the forest. These took the longest time as I made many cylinders. The use of brown paper would give the effect of a tree to the viewer. To make these cylinders stick, I used fevicol. Since the material was a little stiff, I held each cylinder from the place where the fevicol was applied for 7-8 seconds.

Manipulating Paper

To represent the rocks found in a forest, I used paper mache. For this, I soaked some newspaper bits in a bowl with some water and glue and let it sir overnight. After the newspaper was completely soaked, I made small rocks like structure out of it left it to dry. This led to thickening of the newspaper and I was able to represent the rocks.

DO'S AND DON'TS FOR BURNING MATERIAL

DO'S

DON'TS

Burn the material at a distance from your body

Don't burn for a longer time

Wear a mask to protect you from the fumes

Don't burn close to your finger

Burn in surveillance of an elder

Don't use matches, prefer using a candle

MUDDIEST POINT

The most confusing part of the learning was jali work. It was difficult for me to figure out patterns on the first try. It took me a while to get neat patterns from the cutting as the paper would be all clustered and was difficult to cut to.

CLEAREST POINT

The part where I was the most confident of was the transparent sheet flowers. The butter paper used by me to make flowers gave the exact effect I was looking for. The whiteness of the butter paper was enough for e to show the white flowers in a forest. The OHP sheet behind it was placed so that transparency is not lost.

KEY LEARNINGS

  • I learnt how to cut paper in very thin lines and in different ways.

  • I learnt how a very simple thing like paper can be turned into something so beautiful, if we know how to transform it.

  • I learnt about many different cutting tools and adhesives that I hadn't used before.
